My grandfather use to tell me the story of how the Roman empire fell to a Dacian ambush almost every night. The story was so exciting and full of adventure that I would dream about it. The only problem is that one night my dream came real. I was stuck in the middle of the battle. I had to find a way to get myself awake while staying alive long enough to do so. The story had started and ended the same as my grandfather had told it any other time. This time as he walked out of the room he said something, "Tay anake." "What is tay anake," i though. I didn't get it at all. My grandfather is just not understandable some times. I went and turned of my light and laid down into my bed. I woke up to a bunch of noise cluttering outside. I heard horses and people yelling. I got out of bed to look and saw that I was not home anymore. I ran through the house looking for my grandfather, but he was no where to be found. I grabbed the fire poker and went outside to see my grandfather being drug away by the Romans. I ran to them pleading for my grandfather when someone grabbed me and pulled me back inside. "He----." He covered my mouth. "Don't scream. I am here to help you," the stranger said quietly as he looked through the cracked door. "Who are you? Why are they taking my grandfather? Why am I here? And what is that horrible smell?" I asked. "My name is Daris. I am a member of the Dacian empire. The Romans believe that your grandfather is a spy sent here to overthrow them." "Why would they think that?" I asked with such confusion. "He is new here and not known by any soldier. They are over confident and wish to make an example of him. He will be hung at high sun tomorrow. That smell, as you put it, is the nectar of the Gods. Would you like some?" Daris asked. "No! I want to go stop them now. How are you here to help you are letting this happen? Do something! Why are you here?" "I am here because I am the one spying on the Romans. I have men positioned around the city. We have a plan to bring the Romans to us and ambush them. They believe that they are unstoppable, but we have a way to defeat them," he said with a devilish smile. "Then do it now. Let's go! He needs me. I will help you in anyway!" "I planned on that. We need to acquire you arms and armor. Those clothes make you stand out like a sore thumb. Come with me." He looked out the door as he threw his hood over his head. We walked out the door through the muddy streets to another building. This place was unbelievable. Once inside he gave me a set of armor. It fit a little snug, but I felt like a true warrior. He tried to hand me a little dagger, but I tossed it to the side and grabbed what appeared as though a king's sword. "So that is what you are using huh? The gift to the king. That sword is going to be given to him upon our defeat. Humorous that you will be carrying it when they fall," he said as he fumbled with his sheep skin bag of wine. "So what is the plan?" I asked. " The army is currently grouping together to fall into our plan. They are going to leave the city and send his troops to Moesia. When they do they will be slaughtered and then the city will be vulnerable." He said with such enthusiasm as though he could not wait to have blood on his hands. "When the armies leave I am going after my grandfather! With or without help. If I don't get my grandfather back I am as good as dead!" I yelled while swing my blade. "O hold ye breathe kid. You have my assistance. Just watch your guard and pray to the Gods. SHHH! The guards are leaving." The soldiers were walking out of the gates. There had to be hundreds. How many more could still be in the city? Another hundred, hundred fifty tops? I was so nervous my armor was creaking from me shaking. Daris grabbed me and we ran out of the blacksmith house and towards the place my grandfather was being held. They had him in the stockade right in front of the entrance to the castle. I went to run to him when Daris grabbed me and pointed out guards posted at the door. "I will distract them." As he took another drink of wine. "When I do cut the lock and flee. Don't be a hero." I nodded to him as I tried to swallow. Daris ran to the other building and waited for the chance. A guard was busy sneaking up behind him. I tried to give him warning by waving my hand and yelling, but nothing worked. My throat was so dry I could barely breathe let alone yell. I ran over there with my sword scraping the ground. I push Daris out of the way and thrusted my sword at the soldier. I had wounded his arm. He ran off and I fell to the ground exhausted. "Welp, thanks kid. I guess you were sent by the Gods. Here take a drink," as he opened his wine. "We need to move now!" At the same very moment a horn was announced. The soldier had ran and alarmed the army. This was bad. "Move! Now! Get to your Pa'! We have trouble." We ran to the stockade as there were five soldiers charging behind us and another ten in front. I grabbed my sword and sliced through the lock, freeing my grandfather. I helped him to his feet only to be in the middle of at least twenty soldiers telling us to drop our weapons or die. I looked at my grandfather then to Daris. He nodded. I don't know what that meant, but I hope it meant to fight. I set my grandfather on the ground and charged at the crowd. Daris not far behind. We were back to back with the clinging and shrill sound of blades clashing together. This fight seemed impossible, but we were doing it. With kicking and swinging the blade back and forth we were killing them. With only two left living and the area stained with bodies and blood, we stood there out of breathe, ready to collapse. The two soldiers retreated. " Com'n b..ack you co...wards!" Daris tried to spit out. I turned around to my grandfather and helped him up. "Are you ok Grandfather?" He nodded. "What has happened here? I am so...........", before i could finish an arrow came from behind and went straight through my heart. I looked down at it sticking out of my chest as I collapsed to the earth. I was finished, or so I thought. I woke up back in my own bed. I was a little freaked out and ran to my grandfather. "What happened? Was It real? I was shot!" I was so full of questions. "Sit downt myt chaild." he said barely understandable. "It was all true. Every year on this day at midnight if one of our family is asleep we are takingt backt to ourt history. We helpedt the downfall oft the Romanst. It wast not a dream, but we weret actually there." He said as my jaw fell to the floor. The armor and the blade were hanging on the wall. "Grandfather I was injured. I am fine now?" "Yest. As you are a warrior. I am a Warlock. I havet my powers only in that world though." He grinned as he pulled out a book. "We have our history. Just stay awake." |
